Kondoa Rock Art Site

“A place of cultural diversity”

The Kondoa Rock Art Paintings are found in Kondoa District – Dodoma Region. The Site covers an area of 900square kilometers. Most of the paintings are at Kolo forests. At Kolo rocks there are several cultural and heritage paintings, which portray the ancient life style of Warangi tribe. The area was the residence of Chief Mtemi, one of the traditional leaders in Tanzania. There are also several secret places and trees used for ritual performances, paintings of different animals and human beings, hot and cold water springs, and the beautiful landscape.

Accessibility

The area is accessed by road either from Dodoma City about 202km on the way to Kondoa or from Arusha City about 247km on the way to Kondoa.

Other tourist attractions found near Kondoa Rock Art Paintings are Chenene Forest Reserve, Mount Hanang Nature Forest Reserve, Swagaswaga Game Reserve, Mkungunero Game Reserve and Tarangire National Park.

Supporting Facilities

Accommodation can be secured at Kondoa Township or camp at private camping site. There are two camping sites at the area and one at one of the surrounding villages.

The area is suitable for excursions at the old fascinating ancestral rock paintings, biking, camping and learning the life of Sandawe and Hadza ethnic groups.

The Forest Nature Reserve (NFR) category of protected area (PA) offers the highest level of protection under the National Forest Act of Tanzania. FNRs are state-owned and are managed by the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency.
